Intercooler Checklist

This article was created to assist customers with choosing an intercooler for their vehicle which Mishimoto does not directly support. If a customer wishes to fit a Mishimoto universal intercooler into a vehicle that we do not make products for, Mishimoto suggests following the below guide. When using a product not specifically meant for the customer's vehicle, modification may be unavoidable.

Products: Intercoolers (Automotive / Diesel)

Step 1 - Power Level / Size. Mishimoto suggests determining the amount of power the customer plans on making prior to looking at sizes. If the customer is making 500whp, but only has room for the smallest intercooler, there may be a problem. Please refer to this page for suggested Mishimoto Intercooler Power Levels.

MMINT-UZ / MMINT-UZB - 325whp

MMINT-UG / MMINT-UGB - 450whp

MMINT-UM / MMINT-UMB / MMINT-UMG - 550whp

MMINT-UJ / MMINT-UJB - 550whp

MMINT-US / MMINT-USB - 700whp

MMINT-UR / MMINT-URB - 850+whp

Once the customer determines a power level, take a look at the measurements located directly on the Mishimoto web page under the technical specifications.   The customer should be asking themselves if the measurements provided can work on the vehicle being modified.

Step 2 - Bumper. With the bumper still on the vehicle, raise the vehicle in the air and take a look at the available space behind the bumper.  Will the plastic bumper cover need to be modified when fitting the intercooler? Additionally, Mishimoto suggests keeping the metal bumper beam in mind as some customers are forced to modify this piece as well. Mishimoto does not recommend deleting the metal bumper beam.

Does the vehicle come with fog lights embedded within the plastic bumper cover?

Does the plastic bumper cover have any sensors, or additional wiring running through it?

Step 3 - Additional Coolers.  Many newer cars come with oil coolers, power steering coolers, and/or other coolers from the factory. Mishimoto suggests that customers keep these in mind when determining which Mishimoto Universal Intercooler is suitable for their application. Mishimoto does not suggest deleting these coolers.  We offer numerous universal oil coolers, and transmission/power steering coolers available for purchase if the customer would like to relocate the stock coolers.

Step 4 - A/C Condenser / Radiator Support. If the customer has removed the front bumper at this time, they should be able to see the A/C condenser (if applicable) and the radiator support.

Will the A/C condenser affect fitment in any way?

Will the intercooler come into contact with the radiator support?

Step 5 - Piping Diameter. If the vehicle comes with an intercooler from the factory, take a look at the diameter and compare that to the inlet/outlet sizes of the Mishimoto Universal Intercooler.  Generally, the customer will want to avoid unnecessary restrictions.  If the customer has 3" hot-side piping and 3.25" cold-side piping, an intercooler with an inlet/outlet of 2.5" would be less than ideal.

If the vehicle does not come with an intercooler from the factory, it is up to the customer to determine the best intercooler piping sizes for their application. Unfortunately, Mishimoto does not currently sell universal intercooler piping.

Step 6 - Piping Location. If the vehicle comes with an intercooler from the factory, compare the inlet/outlet locations between the Mishimoto and stock intercooler.  Factory inlet and outlet locations can vary greatly by manufacturer and vehicle.  If the factory intercooler has the inlet/outlet at the top, a Mishimoto intercooler with the inlet/outlet on the left/right sides will be less than ideal unless custom piping is made.

If the vehicle does not come with an intercooler from the factory, it is up to the customer to determine the best intercooler for their application. Unfortunately, Mishimoto does not currently sell universal intercooler piping.
